Thermoplastic piping is joined or connected to an internal or external thermoplastic fitting by a tapered spigot-and-socket joint which is secured by welding. The angle of the taper lies between 5 and 20 degrees, especially 10-12 degrees, and the two tapers may be different. The tapering and fusion operations may be performed simultaneously using a heated tapered fusion tool. If desired a band of metal or cellulose may be placed round the pipe or fitting during fusion. Alternatively, the tapers may be cut and subsequently melted before being engaged into one another. The degree of entry of the joint may be limited by a land at the inner end. |
