A variable speed drive e.g. for a rail vehicle, comprises a single speed gas turbine GT connected through a speed reduction gear SR, a variable slip, constant output speed clutch MC and a torque converter TC to a change-speed gear-box GB of the type having two forward and two reverse speeds selected by hydraulically operated double clutches C, C1. Hydraulic fluid for the system is supplied by a pump P, driven by the clutch input member, the flow being divided by a valve 54 so as to supply the torque converter, a modulating valve 58 and a regulator valve 62 through lines 56, 59 and 60 respectively. Clutch control.-Valve 58 controls the supply to the clutch MC and comprises a pressure regulator 68 feeding a spool 73 controlled by three solenoid-operated valves 80, 81 and 85. Actuation of either of valves 80, 81 or both together forces spool 73 to the right in the Figure against spring 74 to produce different pressure levels in the line 63 and therefore variable engagement of the clutch. A throttling orifice 77 in the exit from chamber 78 behind spool 73 slows the movement of the spool to control the rate of rise of pressure thereby producing smooth clutch engagement. A speedresponsive governor valve 86 is provided to vent the system if the turbine speed falls too low. The clutch has a centrifugal valve 10 which exerts an overriding control on the fluid pressure in line 63 to produce a constant output speed. Gear-box control.-The regulator valve 62 controls the fluid supply through line 99b to four solenoid-operated valves 95-98, a fifth valve 99 acting on valve 62 to control the rate of rise of pressure in line 99b. Each of said valves 95-98 controls one of the clutches of the speed selecting double clutches C, C1. Appropriate energization of the solenoids of valves 80, 81, 95-98 is effected by movement of the driver's control handle to select a particular speed. Gear-box.-The output shaft 24 from the torque converter drives reverse and forward lay shafts 32, 33 through constant mesh gears 27, 28, 29 and 27, 30 respectively. Shaft 32 carries the double clutch Cl, the clutches 36, 37 thereof being connectible to the two reverse speed gears 40, 41 which are in constant mesh with gears 43, 44 on the output shaft 42. These gears are also in constant mesh with the two forward speed gears 38, 39 carried by the clutches 34, 35 of the clutch C on shaft 33. A method of operating two of the above systems in a rail car is described in the case where both systems are driving the car at low gear. To effect an upward shift, the clutch MC of the first system is disengaged and a highspeed gear clutch engaged at reduced pressure. This pressure is then increased to fully engage the clutch and then clutch MC is fully reengaged. The second system is then shifted in the same way.
