The process operates on the airbag stowed in a housing (2) and inflated from a gas generator (1) also installed in the steering column (4), to protect the occupant (6) of the driving seat (7) when an impact is detected by an accelerometer (14). The timing is determined by a calculator (12) responsive to the accelerometer signal and to the distance (L) of the steering wheel (3) from the driver. This distance is estimated from the longitudinal position (x) of the seat and from the inclination ( alpha ) of its backrest (72), using information supplied by the seat position controller (11). |
