The projector has a nozzle (1) with an inlet orifice connected to a source of pressurised liquid and an outlet orifice (4) with a smaller cross section than the inlet to produce a high speed fluid jet. An obturator (21) opposes the outlet and can have a closed position where it is biased to be expelled by the fluid pressure. A retainer (12,16) holds the obturator in the seated position but releases when the temperature exceeds a set value. The retainer can be formed of a shaped memory material.
