A hydraulic damper having a variable vibration characteristic comprises a snubber plate 22 containing openings 25, 26 which permit fluid communication between a working chamber 8 and a diaphragm 20. The vibration characteristic is altered by varying the ratio of the total effective cross-sectional area to the total effective length of the openings 25, 26, thereby modifying the air spring effect provided by gas pocket 19 and diaphragm 20. The ratio is altered by moving plate 30, via drive 32, relative to the snubber plate 22 so that openings 25, 26 are either aligned or misaligned with holes 33. The chamber 8 is connected to a compensating chamber 12, having a flexible wall 13, by a convoluted passageway 9 which allows fluid to be moved from one chamber to the other, thereby providing damping. A resilient wall 5 interconnects anchor parts 1, 4 and anchor part 4 has a rigid partition 7 that supports a diaphragm 20 which acts as a boundary between the fluid in chamber 8 and a gas pocket 19. The fluid may be electro-rheological which when activated by electrodes block the openings 15, 26.
