<p>A small portion of charge material or one of the reactants is suspended in a crucible above the main charge load in a vertical furnace. The portion is preheated to initiate the reaction e.g. exothermic reduction of UF 4 or PuF 4 with calcium metal. The crucible base is fabricated in a low melting point material, e.g. calcium metal and melts to tip the first portion into the main reaction mixture. The complete furnace is held air-tight by a close fitting stopper pref. carrying the crucible support.</p> |
