PURPOSE: To obtain an optically active alcohol useful as pharmaceuticals, etc., using an easily handleable hydride as a reducing agent by reacting a ketone compound in the presence of an optically active metal compound as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION: This optically active alcohol is produced by reacting (A) a ketone compound with (B) a hydride reagent, preferably a metal hydride (e.g. aluminum lithium hydride) in the presence of (C) an optically active metal compound [preferably an optically active cobalt(II) complex expressed by formula I (R<1> and R<2> are each H, an alkyl, an aryl, etc.)]. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of (D) an alcohol compound (e.g. ethanol). The component A is e.g. 2,2-dimethylchromanone expressed by formula II (R<6> to R<8> are each an alkyl, a cycloalkyl or an aromatic substituent) and the reaction is carried out at -60 to 0 deg.C under atmospheric pressure for about 1-10 days. |
