Gas turbine with brake on shaft for hybrid drive electric vehicle

The gas turbine has a controlled valve (42) interposed between the compressor (30) and the turbine wheel (38). To brake the output shaft (16) of the turbine (12) the valve is controlled so it diverts some at least of the compressed air toward an energy dissipater (40). The energy dissipater is a nozzle (44) through which the compressed air expands and is directed into the turbine exhaust. The gas turbine drives an electric generator (14) that supplies an electric motor (22) which drives the vehicle wheels (24). During braking the motor acts as a generator to charge the vehicle accumulators. Once the accumulators are charged the controlled valve is activated to provide the load to aid braking.
