The invention relates to a process for forming, maintaining and tensioning a banding loop around the items to be packaged in a banding machine with a band guide limiting the extension of the loop and an advancing mechanism to unroll, advance and tension a band (18). During the advance phase and after reaching the end position the band (18) is maintained and drawn along in the form of a loop by rotating means (28a - 28i) exerting a tractive force and at least partially driven along the band guide (12) but is immediately lifted from the band guide (12) on being tensioned. On the banding machine for banding the items to be packaged with a band (18) which is influenced according to the process, the means rotating along the band guide take the form of at least one endlessly circulating flexible conveyor (28) and/or at least partially drivable rollers. |
