The system has a grooved wiping roller extending for the width (B) of the strip and working in a wiper bed to form the metering device. At each strip edge, the roller (1) has a smooth joint to a zone (4, 5, 7) outside the strip, and in which the effective groove depth (3) is less than in the one inside the strip. The depth can be arranged to decrease gradually outside the strip, where the grooves can contain filler material (6), or can be covered by plastics cladding (8). The latter can also form a coupling between the roller and a driving motor.
