PURPOSE: To effectively utilize butenes which occur in oil refinery but are a little poor in usefulness to produce 8C aromatic hydrocarbons such as xylenes in high yield by bringing butene dimers of low branching degree into contact with the reforming catalyst. CONSTITUTION: Olefins of 8C, as dimerized buttens with an average branching degree of 0.7-2.2, or paraffins of 8C as a hydrogenation product of the 8C olefins are brought into contact with a reforming catalyst (suitably platinum/alumina catalyst), preferably at 460-560 deg.C, 0.5-30kg/cm<2> G, H2 /oil molar ratio of 0.5-10 and LHSV of 0.1-10 hour<-1> . The starting butene is preferably free from isobutene. The dimerization of butenes is preferably carried out by using, as a dimerization catalyst, a solid acid comprising alumina or titanium oxide catalyst containing sulfuric acid radical but is weaker than the superstrong acid and has an acid strength of 11.35<Ho<=1.5 where Ho is the Hammett's acidity function value whereby butene dimers of low branching degree are obtained. |
