PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate various intervals between an engraving graver and a surface of an engraving intaglio printing cylinder in the case of an uneven short wavelength during mechanical sensing of a photomechanical machine. SOLUTION: The device 1 for engraving an intaglio printing cylinder 5 and an engraving intaglio printing plate comprises an engraving tool 3 mounted on a holder 2 movable to a surface of the printing plate together with a sensing member 4 for sensing a surface of the plate to be engraved. The member is a distance measuring member 4 for contactlessly measuring a distance from the surface of the plate. To hold a predetermined tool distance W based on the distance measured by the member 4, the holder 2 is regulated to the surface of the plate by an adjusting element 9.
