A driving apparatus for opening and closing a lid (1) which is provided to open or close a recorded medium insertion opening of a recording medium player. When the lid does not reach a fully opened position or a fully closed position in a predetermined period of time after the starting of opening or closing drive of the lid, such a fault condition can be removed by inverting the direction of rotation of a driving motor (3). Moreover, the lid is driven in the closing direction after a predetermined period of time from the time when a recording medium is inserted into the recording medium insertion opening, or the lid is driven in the closing direction in response to a closing command. By these operations, it is made possible to prevent the lid from being left in a halfway closed position.
