Soils stabilised with a hydrophobic surfactant on a hydrophilic supper

A composition for rendering soils and other materials water resistant is obtd. by mixing a hydrophobic surfactant, pref. cationic, with a non or slightly hydrophilic inert charge. The surfactant is pref. an amine or its deriv. of formula: R-NH2 (where R is a 8-22 (hydrocarbyl). The proportion of surfactant to inert charge is pref. 0.1-20% and esp. 0.1-6%. The ionic transfer of the surfactant to the surface of the soil being being treated is better than when a hydrophilic charge e.g. fly ash is used.
