PURPOSE: To realize an image processor which is capable of performing image processing according to the characteristic of inputted image data and a method therefor. CONSTITUTION: A smoothing processing circuit 253 converts the resolution of an inputted image from 300dpi to 600dpi and performs a smoothing for the edge part of an image. An edge emphasis circuit 261 outputs the picture element under consideration for which an emphasis processing is performed by the image data obtained by the line memory of the smoothing processing circuit 253. A selector 262 selects the image signal outputted from the smoothing processing circuit 253 or the edge emphasis circuit 261 based on the signal/ IMCHR showing the attribute of the picture element under consideration outputted from the smoothing processing circuit 253.
