PURPOSE: To provide the vehicle detector which is easy to install and maintain and has a high detection precision. CONSTITUTION: Plural perpendicular slit beams 21 of light at certain intervals are obliquely thrown downward from above a light throwing part 5 provided on the road side. When the projection reflected image of these slit beams 21 is picked up by a CCD camera of a light reception part 6, the projection picture of slit beams 21 is parallel lines in the case of the absence of a tire 12, but it is bent in the case of the presence of the tire 12; and therefore, the presence or the absence of the tire (wheel) is detected in a decision part 7 by the change of the parallel-line picture.
