The apparatus may comprise two water softeners in parallel so that one may always be in use. In Fig. 2 the metering device comprises a vane wheel 21 driven by softened water passing along conduit 8 which is associated with two softeners (not shown). In use after a given number of revolutions or angle of revolution of vane wheel 21 causes an impulse to be delivered from electrical transformer 25 to pump 27 which is operated to deliver additive from container 19, and to counter 31. After a given number of pulses counter 31 delivers a pulse to a switch (not shown) which causes one softener to be cut off from the water flow and to be regenerated by salt, and the other softener to receive the water flow. In other embodiments the additive container may have level sensing means to control the switching over of the softeners, and the rotation of the wheel may be measured mechanically.
