PURPOSE: To produce a carbon fine powder for an electroviscous fluid, having a high electric resistivity, fine powdery properties and a low initial viscosity and capable of manifesting excellent viscosity responsiveness to an applied voltage and stable performances for a long period and provide a method for producing the fine powder. CONSTITUTION: This carbon fine powder for an electroviscous fluid is obtained by coating and forming an electrical insulating resin layer having 0.5-2.3nm film thickness on the surface of a soot fine powder, containing fullerene and having 10-10<8> Ωcm electric resistivity and >=99wt.% carbon content or a fine powder prepared by carrying out the wet oxidation of the soot fine powder and increasing the oxygen content to 20wt.%. The carbon fine powder is produced by using the soot fine powder, containing the fullerene and having 10-10<8> Ωcm electric resistivity and >=99wt.% carbon content or fine powder prepared by immersing the soot fine powder in a liquid oxidizing agent and carrying out the wet oxidation of the particle surface until the oxygen content attains 20wt.% as a substrate, immersing the prepared substrate in an electrical insulating resin solution, then heat-treating the resultant substrate, coating and fixing a resin layer having 0.5-2.5nm film thickness on the surface thereof. |
