PURPOSE: To obtain the subject copolymer by culturing a bacterium belonging to the genus Aeromonas, using a mixture of fatty acids having the number carbons equal to or larger than a specific number value in even and odd numbers as a carbon source, having biodegradability and bio-compatibility, useful as a medical material, agricultural material, etc. CONSTITUTION: A bacterium [e.g. Aeromonas caviae, FA=440 strain (BP-3,432), etc.] is inoculated into a medium containing a mixture of fatty acid (e.g. stearic acid, etc.) having >=12 carbons in an even number and a fatty acid (e.g. tridecanoic acid, etc.) having >=13 carbons in an odd number as a carbon source, subjected to shaking culture at 30 deg.C for 72 hours, the culture solution is centrifuged to collect a cell, the cell is dried under reduced pressure, suspended in chloroform and thermally extracted at 50 deg.C for 5 hours. The extracted solution is filtered, mixed with methanol, the precipitated copolymer is separated and dried to give the objective three component-based copolymer comprising three components of 3-hydroxybutyrate of formula I, 3-hydroxyvalerate of formula II and 3-hydroxyhexanoate of formula III. |
