The machine, esp for collecting pre-sorted household waste held temporarily in bins (2), has a main chamber (4) divided by separating partitions into two or more compartments extending the whole height of the container and equipped with loading ports (16). It also has at least one receiving hopper (9) with a sill (9A) and a compacter (M1). In addition to the main chamber (4) the vehicle has at least one secondary storage chamber (12), and a guide to feed material into it from the hopper. Additional guides can be incorporated to channel materials into the various compartments of the main chamber at the same time. The hopper can also be divided vertically into a number of separate compartments, each feeding one section of the main chamber.
