METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF SHEET GLASS

Process and apparatus for improving the smoothness and planarity of a sheet or ribbon of glass having a surface temperature of about 780 DEG to 920 DEG C. and having a viscosity of the order of 106.5 to 105 poises just before passing to and between a pair of metallic spaced smoothing and reducing rollers maintained uniformly at a surface temperature selected from a range of about 400 DEG to 650 DEG C. and by which the ribbon is reduced to 75 percent to 95 percent of its thickness prior to entry between the rollers. The surface temperature of the rollers is selected inversely as the temperature of the glass, within the ranges stated, and as shown upon the graph of Figure 1.
