Low deuterium water is suitable to prevent or cure several types of cancer disease. In the process according to the invention water vapour obtained by the direct or catalytic combustion of low deuterium hydrogen or with its reaction with oxygen-containing materials is fractionated to produce low deuterium water. For the production of low deuterium hydrogen an alkali metal, preferably sodium-amalgam obtained from alkali-chloride electrolysis is reacted with natural water and the hydrogen formed in the process - with a deuterium content of approx. 1/3 of that of the starting natural water - is used for the production of water vapour.
