A filter assembly which separates dispersed solids or liquids from a liquid consists of: (a) a cylindrical vessel (12) accommodating a number of rotary mixer units (50) on vertical axes, fixed on each end to rotating plates, causing the mixer units to move through concentric paths; and (b) numerous filter elements arranged within the circular vessel, arranged parallel to the rotor rotational axis in a concentric ring. The novelty is that the mixer elements (19) consist of strips of material which are inclined at an angle to the rotor rotational axis.
