The modulator (40) includes master and slave high voltage power supplies (41,42) which are coupled to a voltage source to provide output pulses that drive the load. A synchronised pulse generator provides pulse width timing and synchronised amplitude commands for the master high voltage power supply. A control loop (58) is coupled in a feedback path from respective outputs of the high voltage power supplies and control inputs. A ramp generator (48) synchronises the timing pulses with corresponding amplitude commands and controls the rise time of each power supply. A number of low voltage DC capacitors are connected in parallel with each respective power supply and provide energy storage for the output pulses. An isolation resistor is coupled between respective outputs of the high voltage power supplies and the load.
