1281427 Rolling; gear shaving LEAR SIEGLER Inc 19 June 1970 [29 Sept 1969] 48976/71 Divided out of 1281426 Headings B3K and B3M A machine that can be used either for rolling or shaving gear blanks incorporates a main frame 10 supporting a rolling or shaving tool T on its upper portion 18, and a vertically movable work supporting slide 20 on its lower portion 12. The position of the slide 20 relative to the frame, and hence the position of a workpiece W relative to the tool T, is adjustable by a screw 24 and by a toggle assembly 36. The screw 23, Fig. 2, which is rotatable by a work and worm-wheel 30, 28 enables the initial position of the slide to be set, whereas the toggle assembly provides feeding movements of the slide during a working operation. The toggle assembly includes a lever 36 which is coupled to the main frame through a pivot 38 and the screw 24, and coupled to the slide through a link 40. One end of the lever is positionable by a cylinder assembly 46, while the other end is movable in response to the position of a roller 58 on an indexable cam 60. For a rolling operation, the work-table 96 needs only to move vertically, but the tool T is adjustable about a vertical axis A relative to the frame portion 18. A cam 60 of smooth profile is employed, the cam being rotatable by a rack 84 and cylinder unit 88. For a shaving operation, the work supporting table 120, Fig. 8, is of more complex form, and a stepped cam 60 is used. The cam is rotatably indexed by a pawl and ratchet mechanism and is rotatable to its initial position by the rack 84 and cylinder unit 88. Alternatively, a composite cam having both a stepped portion and a smooth portion may be employed. The table 120 is formed with a base 122 which is rotatably adjustable about the axis A, and a carriage 126 slidably mounted on the base. The carriage is slidably moved by a motor driven screw 140. A work-table 152 is mounted on the carriage both for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis 153, and for rotatable adjustment about a pin 150. The pivotal movement allows gears with crowned teeth to be produced. The construction of the table 120 permits axial traverse, underpass, and diagonal traverse movements to be made. |
