PURPOSE: To effectively utilize light by eliminating a dead space which does not contribute to condensing light and restraining the occurrence of astigmatism in a convex lens array for backlight illumination used in a stereoscopic image display device. CONSTITUTION: The convex lens array is constituted of a transparent base plate 51 made of glass, silicone or plastic for optics, and twelve spherical lens elements 52 arranged by three in a length direction and by four in a breadth direction and made of the same material as the base plate 51. The lens element 52 is formed in such a shape that the outer periphery of the spherical convex lens is cut to be square, and the end faces of the adjacent lens elements 52 are allowed to entirely abut.
