The invention concerns a numerically controlled turning machine with a stationary headstock (1) in which a spindle (1b) is mounted so that it can rotate, the spindle being designed to hold a workpiece (2) in a first chuck. The turning machine also has a counter-spindle (4) which is designed to hold the rotating workpiece (2') in a second chuck. The machine also has a tool turret (3) which can be coupled so as to turn about an axis (3a) and which is mounted on a first carriage (5, 6) that can be moved in two directions at right angles to each other. The first carriage (5, 6) also carries the counter-spindle (4). In addition to the spindle (1b), a second tool-carrier (7) is provided. The counter-spindle (4) and the tool turret (3) are mounted on the first carriage (5, 6) in constant relative disposition, and the second tool-carrier (7) is mounted on a second carriage (8) which can move at least in the direction at right angles to the spindle axis (1a). The second tool-carrier (7) holds two sets (7a; 7b) of tools, one set (7a) being designed and located for machining the workpiece (2) using the spindle (1b) while the other set (7b) is designed and located for machining the workpiece (2') using the counter-spindle (4).
