PROCESS FOR PREPARING AZAINDOLES WITH AN ACTIVATED COPPER CHROMITE CATALYST BY CATALYTIC DEHYDROCYCLISATION OF ALKYLPYRIDYLAMINES (PYRIDOPYRIDINES)

A new process is disclosed for preparing azaindoles of general formulas (I), (II), (III), (IV), in which R<1> to R<4> stand for hydrogen, methyl, C1-C4 alkoxy, aryl or aryloxy, and Z<1> to Z<3> stand for hydrogen or methyl. The process is carried out with ortho-alkylpyridylamines as initial material having general formulas (V), (VI), (VII), (VIII), in which R<1> to R<4> and Z<1> to Z<3> have said meanings and X and Y stand for hydrogen, C1-C4 alkyl or aryl. The ortho-alkylpyridylamines are converted into a product of the formulas (I) to (IV) by catalytic dehydrocyclisation with an activated copper chromite catalyst.
