1326188 End face shaft seals BORG-WARNER CORP 5 Oct 1971 [26 Oct 1970] 46239/71 Heading F2B In a device for driving and urging the rotary sealing ring 37 of a mechanical seal 10 into facial sealing contact with the non-rotary sealing ring 33, and comprising a spring holder 41 provided with a cylindrical cavity 47 having longitudinally disposed keys 48 adjacent its front end 46 and housing a retaining washer 53 and springs 52 compressed between the holder and the washer 53 which abuts the inner ends of the keys; the washer has an outer diameter DW greater than the effective internal diameter (DK, Fig. 4) of the keys and is free of indentations registerable with the keys and is assembled by inserting it in the holder tilted with respect to the cavity axis, as in Fig. 3, and then pivoting it to a position transverse to the axis and behind the keys 48. In use, the keys 48, which are welded to the holder, engage grooves 51 in the ring. In the embodiment shown for a rotary pump shaft seal, the holder 41 is secured by screws 44 to a sleeve 16 on the shaft 14 and the non-rotary sealing ring 33 is seated in recess 32 in a flange 22 secured to the pump housing 12. The springs 52 are housed in pockets 55 in the holder, each pocket having a fluid passage 58 therein. Cooling or lubricating fluid is supplied to the seal from a passage 67 in flange 22, leakage past the seal being drained through a passage 31. The rings 33 and 37 may be of carbon and tungsten carbide respectively. |
