A liquid crystal display device includes a light shield layer formed on the display electrode (3) at the edge of each display aperture as a thin layer (5) at the upstream edge of the aperture in the rubbing direction of the device, and a thick layer (4) formed on the thin layer at a spacing (L) from the boundary of the display aperture. This leaves a thin light shield over the part of the display cell having reverse tilted liquid crystal molecules, thereby enhancing the quality of the display. <IMAGE> |
