A fuel rod (1) for a nuclear reactor has a coil spring (5) to hold the stack of cylindrical fuel pellets (3) in place. The spring (5) includes an end coil (12') that presses on the flat inside surface (10') of the end plug (4a) and has a reduced diameter which is less than the diameter of the inside surface (10') of the plug.
