PURPOSE: To obtain a bright display without using color filters, to display plural colors including white with the same pixels and to display white of the highest display frequency in a nonselection state in which voltage is not impressed between the electrodes of a liquid crystal cell. CONSTITUTION: Phase difference plates 21, 22 are arranged across the liquid crystal cell 10 formed by subjecting liquid crystal molecules to 90 deg. twist orientation. A polarizing plate 20 is arranged on the front surface side of a front side phase difference plate 21. A reflection plate 23 is arranged on the rear surface side of a rear side phase difference plate 22. The delay axes of the front side and rear side phase difference plates 21, 22 are respectively intersected orthogonally with the liquid crystal molecule orientation directions on the front surface side and rear surface side substrates of the liquid crystal cell 10. The transmission axis of the polarizing plate 10 is intersected diagonally with the delay phase axis of the front side phase difference plate 21. The values of the respective retardation of both phase difference plates 21, 22 are set in a range where the the sum thereof is Δnd+20 to 70nm with Δnd of the liquid crystal cell and the absolute value of the retardation difference is k/2± I λ/12 is a positive integer) of wavelength λ of the prescribed light of a visible light band. |
