PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal display device of a scattering type which is capable of making bright and high-speed response display having a high contrast ratio even in high time-sharing driving and is low in threshold voltage and excellent in stability. CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal display device is formed by holding a liquid crystal layer 4 between transparent insulating substrates 1 and 11, disposing transparent electrodes 2, 12 and oriented films 3, 13 on the inside surfaces of these substrates 1, 11, twisting liquid crystals in a thickness direction and specifying the thickness (d) of the liquid crystal layer 4 to <=15μm. The twist angle of these liquid crystals is specified to >=360 deg.C and the viscosity of the liquid crystal material to >=25cPs. Since the twist angle of the liquid crystals is specified to >=360 deg.C, a steep electro-optical characteristic is obtd. and the higher contrast is obtd. In addition, the viscosity of the liquid crystals is low and, therefore, the high-speed response display is possible, and since additives are not used, the threshold voltage is low and the stability is excellent.
