PURPOSE: To detect the position of a vehicle in the lateral direction to the center of a driving lane. CONSTITUTION: A plurality of tape-shaped magnets 1 which are installed at an equal space in the direction where a vehicle advances at the center of a driving lane, are provided with a number of magnetic poles which are alternately magnetized in a row in the side direction of the driving lane, and where the magnetic pole surfaces face the vertical direction of the road surface of the driving lane are provided at a vehicle position detection device for detecting the position of the vehicle driving in the driving lane. Magnetic detection means 2a and 2b are installed in the direction of vehicle width at the lower portion of a vehicle 3, a number of magnetic poles are detected at a plurality of parts for the move in lateral direction of the vehicle 3, and the position in the lateral direction of the vehicle is obtained from the combination array of the detection magnetic poles.
