Ophthalmic compositions and methods for preserving and using such compositions are disclosed. In one embodiment, such compositions include a liquid medium, a first antimicrobial component selected from antimicrobial peptides and mixtures thereof, and a second antimicrobial component, other than the first antimicrobial component, which is preferably substantially non-oxidative. Compositions which include a liquid medium and antimicrobial peptide nanotubes effective to disinfect a contact lens present in the liquid medium containing the nanotubes are also disclosed. Preserved compositions useful for caring for contact lenses are included within the scope of the present invention.
