A radar system has a transmitter of high frequency signals that are propagated with an antenna array of superconducting elements. The reflection from an object (8) is directed back through a lens (3) on to the array (2). The antenna array can be constructed up to 10 m in diameter, and the elements can be cooled by liquid nitrogen. The lens will vary in size depending upon the application. For road vehicle use a diameter of 5-30 cm is appropriate, and for aircraft a diameter of up to 60 cm. Appropriate frequencies are in the range of 60-100 GHz.
