The electric winch (1) is driven by an electric motor (12) in whose output gearing is fitted a sensor (35) for the winch shaft speed. The motor mounting includes a torque sensor (34) which monitors the actual reaction force on the mountings and thereby the winch torque. A programmed control computes a duty cycle for the winch and compares it with a programmed value to call up routine inspections. The motor mounting is rotationally symmetric with the displacement proportional to the torque. A simple processor classifies the winch loading and operating time to add to a programmed matrix from which the inspection time can be determined.
