The invention concerns a method of separating loose sheets such as bank notes, in which the sheets are stacked in a feed tray (10) in a defined position ready for vertical feeding into a separator (30). The sheets move vertically inside the feed tray from the feed position into a separation position. While the preceding stack (1) is still being separated in the separator, the next stack (2) is already being prepared in the separator feed tray in the defined feed position.
