The surface (13) of a machine part with rolling and/or sliding contact has a plateau-like structure (17) which is formed by an at least two-stage honing process and is interrupted by a plurality of intersecting furrows (15) which extend at an angle to a longitudinal axis and have a depth determined by the removal of peaks (14) from the profile left by a first honing stage as far as the profile centre line (16). The longitudinal extension of these furrows (15) is delimited by material displacement brought about by an abrasive grain (18), such that uncontrolled flowing away of the lubricant is prevented.
