An article of manufacture which is subject to erosive and corrosive attack in a high-temperature environment is formed of a substrate (1) of nickel or cobalt-based superalloy, and a protective silicide coating (6) disposed on the substrate. A thermal barrier layer (2) of ceramic may be disposed between the superalloy and the silicide layer, and an MCrAlY layer (4) may be disposed between the ceramic and the superalloy substrate. The silicide coating (6) is preferably MoSi2.
