<p>In a process for processing moulded packaging units made from expandable polystyrene which is foamed with the aid of a foaming agent, the units are ground up to produce granules of below 25 mm in size and the granulated material (36) is then introduced into a bath (20) of water to which boric acid or boron salt and/or boric acid natron and/or calcium borate has been added. The granulated material (36) is passed through the bath, its operating temperature being around 40-130 DEG C, preferably 80-110 DEG C, and is then dried. The bath (20) flows in direction (x) and the relative proportions of water and additive are between 7:1 and 4:1, in particular 6:1. The apparatus used comprises a tank (10) for the temperature-controlled bath (20), at least one flat unit (17, 18) or similar guide unit which is submerged in the bath, and a discharge unit (38) which protrudes into the bath at the end (22) of the tank.</p> |
