A cutting unit for removing annular welding beads from the inside of welded pipes comprises a cutting head (11) connected to a rod (26) for inserting and rotating the head (11) inside the pipe wall. A knife holder (12) on the cutting head (11) holds the knife (15) at both ends and moves around the pipe wall on both sides of the bead. The plate-like knife (15) has a cutting edge along the long side and bridges a channel (14) on the knife holder (12) allowing passage of the cut-off bead. A back stop (18) attached to the cutting head (11) presses the knife holder (12) against the pipe wall during cutting and has a free end normal to the longitudinal direction of the cutting head (11) and sliding around the inner wall of the pipe.
