IC engine with exhaust brake

The IC engine (1) comprises a cylinder head (3) in which are located inlet and outlet (4) valves, controlling the gas exchange and acting against the force of prestressed valve springs (8). In the exhaust manifold (5) an actuator is fitted, controlled by the exhaust gases. There is a pressure engageable spring biassing device (11) for the support of each outlet valve side spring. This can be activated to provide an increase in the valve spring force during engine braking. Preferably the biassing device consists of an annular body (10), defining a pressure chamber (17) and supporting the valve spring.
