The material-transfer system is particularly for use when bending, straightening or cutting bar material, having a transfer table (11) with opening (12) running in the lengthwise direction (L). Movement takes place in the opening in this direction, while in the path of the movement is a bridge-piece (16) extending over the opening in the transverse direction, to guide material over the opening in the transverse direction. The piece can be moved out of the way, being mounted at one end in the opening, and swinging clear of the path of the bending machine roughly in the plane of the table. It can have a flexible portion, extending over the full width of the opening, and typically consisting of a link chain to which a fixing section is joined.
