The electronic key (2) has a power transmission coil (5) connected to a transmission power supply with its own source via a frequency generator. The transmission coil is supplied with a defined transmission frequency when a button (9) is actuated. A reception power supply with no power source has a power reception coil (17) in a receiver housing (16) and is matched to the power transmission coil to accept inductively transformed power for correct arrangement of the transmission and reception housings. The geometric arrangement of the power receiver coil and an IR receiver (22) on one side and of the power transmission coil and IR transmitter (8) on the other side and the button is such that, when the transmission and reception housings are brought together with opposed power transmission and reception coils and IR transmitter and receiver windows with the button accessible for actuation, power and encoded IR data transfer occurs when the button is depressed.
