PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new component comprising a specific transition metal compound having a conjugated heterocyclic five-membered ring ligand, having a high activity, giving a high mol.wt. polymer on the polymerization of theα-olefin, and excellent in copolymerizability. CONSTITUTION: This component comprises a compound of the formula: (R<1> )m (R<2> )n M [R<1> is a conjugated heterocyclic ligand of the formula (Y is Si, Ge, etc.; R<3> -R<7> are each a 1-20C hydrocarbon; R<2> is H, cyclopentadienyl, etc.; M is a IV-VI group element of the periodic table; (m) is 1-3; (n) is an integer satisfying the relation of an equation; (m+n) = the atomic valency of M] [e.g. bis(silolyl) zirconium dichloride]. The component is produced e.g. by metallizing silole, germole, etc., and subsequently reacting the product with a IV-VI group transition metal compound. Theα-olefin polymerization catalyst is preferably produced by combining this component with a compound selected from a lower organic aluminum compound, an aluminum oxy compound, a Lewis acid, etc.
