<p>1431238 Substituted benzyl alcohols BAYER AG 2 July 1974 [3 July 1973] 29245/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] Benzyl alcohols of the general formula in which R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, trifluoromethyl, trifluoromethoxy or trifluoromethylthio radical; and R<SP>2</SP> is a fluorine, chlorine, bromine, trifluoromethyl, trifluoromethoxy or trifluoromethylthio radical are prepared (a) from the corresponding benzaldehydes by catalytic reduction, (b) from the corresponding carboxylic acids by reduction with LiAlH 4 or (c) from the corresponding carboxylic acid halides by reduction with NaBH 4 . Exemplified are the preparation of 2,4- difluorobenzyl alcohol, 3-ohloro-4-trifluoromethoxy benzyl alcohol, 2-fluoro-4-chloro benzyl alcohol, 2-fluoro-6-chloro benzyl alcohol, 2- trifluoromethyl benzyl alcohol, 2-chloro-4-trifluoromethyl benzyl alcohol and 4-trifluoromethylthio benzyl alcohol.</p> |
