<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect a bearing from contamination. SOLUTION: This boring machine 10 is provided with a cutter head 14 rotatably attached to a hydrostatic bearing 30. High pressure water is supplied to a passageway 35 between confronting bearing surfaces 33, 34. The confronting bearing surfaces 33, 34 react axial and radial loads 5, and can fulfil a relative rotary motion. The high pressure water is discharged from the passageway 35 to prevent contamination of the bearing 30 caused by the ingress of materials removed by the cutter head 14 in operation.</p> |
