The transfer mechanism comprises upper (4) and lower (5) support surfaces carried on a base chassis (1). Both surfaces are fixed relative to each other to lie parallel with a predetermined distance (e) between them. A first controllable drive mechanism (7) moves the surfaces relative to the chassis in a first direction (9). The surfaces are movable between a first end position, in which they are directly over the chassis, and a second end position in which they project beyond one end of the chassis. A flexible belt (11) passes around both surfaces and around a system of guides and rollers mounted on the chassis.
