<p>An antilock brake system for an automotive vehicle having a master brake cylinder (50) and wheel brakes (18, 22, 24, 26) hydraulically connected to the master brake cylinder (50) during normal vehicle braking including a power cylinder (112) having an adjustable piston (102), an electric motor (76) connected drivably to the adjustable piston (102) through a selectively engageable electromagnetic clutch (82), a solenoid operated valve (72) situated in fluid communication with the wheel brakes (18, 22, 24, 26) and adapted to connect the master brake cylinder (50) to the wheel brakes (18, 22, 24, 26) for a normal braking action and for isolatingthe master cylinder (50) from the wheel brakes (18, 22, 24, 26) and connecting the wheel brakes (18, 22, 24, 26) to the power cylinder (112) for antilock cycling of the wheel brakes (18, 22, 24, 26), and an electronic controller (42) and wheel speed sensors (34, 36, 38, 40) for detecting wheel slip whereby the controller (42) triggers the operation of the solenoid valve (72) to isolate the master cylinder (50) from the brakes (18, 22, 24, 26) and to dump pressurized fluid from the brakes (18, 22, 24, 26) when a threshold wheel slip is detected, the clutch (82) being disengaged during the pressure dumping stage of the antilock brake cycle as the motor drive circuit is closed whereby kinetic energy stored in a rotating motor armature (78) may be used in a subsequent brake reapply stage (142, 144) of the antilock brake cycle.</p> |
